I am commenting based on another poster's comments.. unfortunately she is typical of this country where even a supposed teacher doesn't know that the british spell things differently than we do... so I wouldn't worry about wanting to become a teacher here, you didn't spell one thing wrong that I can see.

the way to get work is as another poster said, come to university here or find a british company with american outposts and try to get a job that way or to have a skill that is seriously lacking here and only a foreign born person can fill in which case a company would sponsor you to fill that position. If you are Irish in anyway I believe we have a "special" relationship with people of Irish decent where they are able to work here.. But I might be wrong about that.. good luck.

Well, speaking as an American, everyone wants to go to New York, including a lot of people living right here in the United States. It's a city of 9 million residents, and a good portion of those people are there for the same reasons you want to go. It's a tough city to make it in, but they say if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere. If you really want to move there, then go for it. Don't confine your life to a location because that's where you were born. It's a big world, and there's nothing that says you can't try new places.

As far as a job goes, the medical field is really needy as far as nurses and some doctors go. If you don't get squeamish around medical stuff, it would be a great field to look into. Your almost guaranteed a job, and unless people stop getting sick, you'll have a job for the rest of your life. Yeah, it takes some schooling, and you'd probably have to go to school in the United States, but it will get you good work. You could come over on a student visa maybe, and that would give you a start. Also, since the medical system in the U.S. is different than in the U.K., you have a great opportunity to do very well financially in that field. Nurse practitioners here, for instance, can make almost has much as doctors do...over $100,000 a year. Six figures ain't bad. Regular nursing jobs will get you a nice enough salary to live comfortably on. If you go the doctor route, you could pull in $100,000-$300,000 a year easy. In New York, I'm sure it's a bit higher because of the high cost of living. And it will be high. You'll pay 3-4 times more for an apartment there than you will for the same type of apartment elsewhere in the country. If it's a house you want to live in, New York isn't the best place for that.

The computer industry will keep people employed as well...especially things like networking and web programming. But there are some areas in the computer industry that are over saturated with people looking for jobs.

You could do anything you want...don't limit yourself. But that's my honest opinion. Good luck. I'm sort of in the same predicament myself.

As you say, it is because of the unique situation regarding health care. In the United State between the health insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the food industry there seems to be three-headed monster that has a goal to keep the populous in ill-health. The result is that we have a health care system that is more reactive to sickness rather than proactive in promoting wellness (which would mean a whole lot less profit for all three of those industries).

And to your answer . . . very well thought out. I am indeed in favor of a sinlge payer VA-like system.

Hi! No, you're not too old to start a new career. Heck, I have to basically start over too after 9 1/2 years in the army! lol Take courses in whatever interests you, and in this case, it's accounting. Honey, there is nowhere to go but up as far as this financial thing goes. Do what makes you happy! Unfortuantely I'm in a job I absolutely abhor, yet I have to get out of debt, so here I stay until Feb of next year. Save your money, go to school and do what makes you happy. Do you have any contacts in New York? If not, try to find reliable contacts trhu Spoke or Linkedin.
Good luck and don't let anyone tell you no.
